Encircled by other National Forests and protected lands, the Flathead is the true heart of the northern Rocky Mountain wild ecosystem. Forty-seven percent of the Flathead’s 2.4 million acres is congressionally designated wilderness. Getting into this wild country is relatively easy, with nearly 2,100 miles of foot and horse trails across the Flathead National Forest. Visitors can also enjoy the 219 miles of Wild and Scenic Rivers in the Forest. These federally protected waterways include the North, Middle, and South Forks of the Flathead River. Recreation opportunities abound in any season here. Boaters enjoy the Hungry Horse Reservoir, and mountain bikers cycle the Forest’s recreation trails. Snowmobilers zip over mountainous trails from Marias Pass to the Canyon Creek drainage leading to the summit of Big Mountain.
