Earth: A Digital Portrait of Our Ocean Planet

The Planet Earth poster is 22×28 inches. Our fragile planet hangs suspended in the blackness of space as shown in this new satellite image of Earth. This digital portrait of the Earth was generated by combining three data sets from Earth-observing satellite instruments. These data sets were then draped across a digital elevation model of Earth’s topography from the USGS. The heights of mountains and depths of valleys have been exaggerated by 50 times to make vertical relief visible. Heavy vegetation is green and sparse vegetation is yellow. The presence of the Moon is this image is an artistic addition. The lunar image has been magnified to about twice its relative size. The prominent storm off of the west coast of North America is Hurrican Linda.
